Brookfield State School
Brookfield State School is a school where our students excel academically and participate in a wide variety of extracurricular programs and opportunities in Music, Sport, STEM and academically to name a few! Brookfield is underpinned by an undeniable sense of community that you can feel, see and hear!! Our mission is to empower our learners to understand their strengths and engage their passion to realise their academic and social emotional potential. We value student voice where our students see themselves as learners, who love to learn and know why, towards making a stronger connection and contribution to their worlds.
If you are a continuing family or in our catchment reach out to admin@brookfieldss.eq.edu.au to ensure we are aware of the number of future Prep enrolments. This is invaluable to our planning processes which commence this term! Information is below regarding first round offers for Prep 2026.
Book a school tour to see what makes Brookfield State School the place to BELONG!!

Welcome to Mrs Goodwin who has joined our year 2 team!
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mrs Carolyn Brough, has made the difficult decision to resign from the Department of Education. We thank Mrs Brough for her time at Brookfield SS, and we are grateful for her contributions to our community and extend our warmest wishes for the future ahead.
As year 2B families are aware, Mrs Goodwin has commenced at Brookfield State School from Monday 12 May. (Mon-Wed) Mrs Goodwin joins us with a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to student learning and wellbeing. She will be working in partnership with Mrs Kerr (Thurs – Fri) to ensure a smooth and positive transition for all students.
We warmly welcome Mrs Goodwin to Brookfield State School!
Showing Gratitude to all our Volunteers
Classrooms were open for our students' mums or special someone last week followed by the most delicious scones handmade with love! 💐💖 Thankyou to the Sue and Zoe in our Tuckshop! Thankyou also to Nat and her team of volunteers for a very well stocked Mother's Day stall. There was so much joy and the biggest smiles on students from prep to year 6!

With National Volunteers week (19 May - 25 May) just around the corner, it seemed timely to recognise and thank the incredible individuals who contribute to our school community in so many ways.
Whether it’s baking cupcakes, helping in the classroom, dropping art material for classrooms to use, covering books for the library, set up and support for cross country or sporting events, going on an excursion or simply giving up your time to lend a hand, every act of support makes a difference. All of our volunteers, in which ever way you can help create a warm, welcoming environment where our Brookie students thrive—and we couldn’t do it without you!

Everyday Counts!
As the weather cools down and we head into the reporting end of first semester, there is a buzz of learning, opportunities and experiences continuing over the next six weeks! We also know, towards the end of ten weeks of learning and growing, it is okay feel some tiredness! Thank you for supporting your child’s learning journey this semester —because every day at school truly counts. Each day builds skills, friendships, and confidence. Whether it’s a big breakthrough or a small win, being present makes a difference. Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Keep encouraging regular attendance and celebrating the progress made, one school day at a time.

Please place your orders in Flexischools to support our Year 6 Graduation Committee.

Brookfield Show Visits - Friday 23 May
Our lucky Brookie students will have the pleasure of going to the Brookfield Show with their class on Friday 23 May. Class teachers would love parent volunteers to assist with groups of students at various times on Friday. Keep an eye out for an email from your child/ren's teacher. Those who volunteer to assist will need to have their Mandatory Training completed and filed with our Office Staff.
Students do not need money for the Show, and will not be able to make purchases or go on rides during their class visit. Rather, it is a great time to see the other wonderful exhibits, find their artwork on display, see who won the cookery section, and perhaps even be lucky enough to see some of their classmates perform in the horse arena.

Brookfield's Got Talent - Brookfield Show
If you have a talent to show off - why not enter the Brookfield's Got Talent section at the Brookfield Show?!
Whether you sing, dance, play an instrument, do magic, tell jokes, or have a completely unique talent – they want to see it! All ages and all kinds of acts are welcome. It’s a great chance to have some fun and show off your skills on centre stage!
If you’re keen to enter – or if you know someone who should – make sure you register via the Brookfield Show website at https://www.brookfieldshow.com.au and go to the section Brookies Got Talent.

Reading Focus – Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a big part of learning to read and write. It includes knowing what words mean, how they’re put together, how to use them in sentences, and how they connect to other words.
Oral vocabulary is the words children understand and use when they speak and listen. This is closely linked to reading vocabulary—the words they can recognise and use when reading and writing.
Vocabulary is a vital part of reading instruction. At our school, we use an evidence-based approach that helps students learn new words and their meanings in a clear and structured way.
We teach vocabulary in three stages:
- Before reading: Vocabulary is introduced as background knowledge, helping with comprehension, especially for independent reading.
- During reading: New words are introduced in context as the teacher reads aloud, helping students understand their meaning through the text.
- After reading: The focus shifts to vocabulary development, with discussions and examples that reinforce the words' meanings and usage.
Building vocabulary strengthens background knowledge, aiding comprehension. Every child’s vocabulary is different, and it can be influenced by many factors. It’s important to know that vocabulary growth doesn’t just happen naturally—it needs to be taught.

Maths Olympiad
In Week 3, our dedicated students participated in their inaugural Maths Olympiad contests. Year 4 students engaged in the Maths Explorer competition, while Year 5 and 6 students tackled the Maths Olympiad Junior competition. Despite initial nerves, all participants demonstrated commendable effort and enthusiasm. With this first experience behind them, we look forward to even stronger performances in the upcoming contests. Students will receive their results and solutions during their weekly sessions with Mr. Williams in Week 4. The next contest is scheduled for Week 6, with additional contests approximately every six weeks thereafter. We are excited to continue supporting our Maths Olympiad students on this journey. Thank you to Mr Williams for organising and supporting our Olympiads.
MacqLit Update
MacqLit preparations are progressing well; however, due to unforeseen circumstances and resourcing adjustments, sessions will now begin in Week 5, starting Monday, 26th May. We appreciate your understanding and are excited to see the positive impact MacqLit will have on our students’ learning.
PAT Testing
PAT testing, devised by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), assesses students' skills in literacy and numeracy. These assessments track student progress over time and offer valuable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement across different subjects. Our school uses the results to better understand each student’s learning needs, monitor progress and adjust teaching strategies accordingly. This coming week Years 2-4 will complete the Pat Reading assessment.
Pat Testing schedule for 2025

Reading Across the Year levels
The way reading is taught from Prep to Year 6 may vary as students develop their skills, but one thing is clear—there is a genuine love of reading across our school, regardless of age or stage. The photos below beautifully capture this enthusiasm and joy for reading in action, particularly among our Preps and Year 6 students.

Friendship Recipes:
As parents, we can support our children as they navigate friendships by helping them understand what to look for in a good friend and why it matters. It’s not about popularity or fitting in—it’s about connection, kindness, and shared values.
Below is a tip as to how to support your little person make stronger friendships
Let’s break it down.
Making friends isn’t rocket science—and it doesn’t take any magic tricks, either. Think of it like following a recipe—just without the clean up or any weird vegetables. Your child already has the ingredients; now it’s time to mix them together and see what happens.

Music News
All of our choir families should have received a QParents notification about our upcoming performances in the Fanfare competition on May 29. If you did not receive yours, please contact the Office to obtain a printed copy of this information.
Fanfare is a competition run every second year by the Depatment of Education in Queensland. Hundreds of schools from across the state compete in their local area heats. There are no “winners” at this level, rather every choir is awarded a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level of achievement, as well as professional feedback about their singing in order to help with future performances. The best from these heats advance to their regional finals and, from here, five schools are selected to compete in the state finals in August. Choirs also get to hear other school choirs in their area and learn from their onstage experiences. It is an exciting opportunity for our students, and we are looking forward to going to Kenmore State High school for our heats. Please remember that punctual attendance at rehearsals is vital at this point in the journey (yes – even on cold mornings, rainy mornings and Cross-Country mornings!)

Yesterday we received confirmation that soil remediation works undertaken on the school oval are considered to have been completed to a suitable standard in accordance with industry guidance and based on the soil sample results, clearance for the area has passed.
